April 2024 Meeting – Wednesday, April 17 (One week later than normal)

Please join us for the April meeting of the Forsyth Astronomical Society on April 17. This meeting is one week later than normal to accommodate those going to the April 8th Solar Eclipse. The meeting will be held at the new Kaleideum at 120 West 3rd Street downtown in Winston-Salem, NC.

FAS member Bill Rankin will give us an overview of the Seestar S50 smart telescope (https://www.seestar.com/). His presentation will primarily be on the Seestar S50 Smart Telescope. He will also discuss his All-Sky Cam and Astro Surface, an interesting photo-processing program that is free to download. Seestar S50 is an impressive and budget-friendly smart telescope for beginning astrophotographers. Priced at $500, the Seestar S50 is a camera-equipped telescope on a tracking mount, which enables observation and imaging of celestial targets like the Sun, Moon, and Deep-Sky Objects using a smartphone or tablet. The Seestar App provides wireless control and real-time weather updates, lunar phases, rise/set times, and optimal viewing suggestions for your location.

You don’t have to be a member to attend. If you’re curious and have an interest in astronomy and the universe, come on out! Of course, you can come just for the donuts.

The meeting starts at 7:30 and will conclude with a short business meeting. The doors to the building will open at 7:00 pm. The doors will reman locked. Someone will be there to let you in.

We will meet in the 1st floor La STEAM B room and not in the Think Tank on the 2nd floor.

Enter through the side entrance (Members and Group entrance on the left). Go straight ahead into the meeting room. When leaving, go out through the same side door and make sure the door is closed tight behind you.

Please DO NOT wander throughout the building – The exhibits are NOT open.

3rd street in front of Kaleideum is open and there should be street parking spaces there. There may also be a few street parking spaces on 3rd street going up toward Cherry street. Your best bet for parking might be the Liberty Plaza parking deck at the corner of Second street and Town Run lane, across from the Post Office. The cost is $2 per hour. You can follow the Kaleideum signs from the 3rd floor of the parking deck to the Kaleideum side entrance or go out the first floor of the parking deck, up the sidewalk, and around the front of the building to the side entrance.
