CANCELED: Public observation at Pilot Mountain on May 19

WEATHER UPDATE #2

Unfortunately, the previously expected clearing skies are now forecasted to be 50-70% cloud cover. The state park has made the call to cancel this event.

==========

On Friday, May 19, Forsyth Astronomical Society, Kaleideum, and the rangers of Pilot Mountain State Park will host a free public astronomy observation at Pilot Mountain State Park. The park will have several science-themed activities taking place during this event. The event will begin at 8:00 PM, the astronomy observation begins around 9:00 PM, and the event will end at 11:00 PM. If conditions permit, the planets Mars and Venus, and several deep sky objects, should be visible. This event is weather-dependent, and this post and the FAS Facebook page will be updated with the weather decision the evening before the event.

This event is free and open to the public. The observing site is in the summit parking lot. Parking at the summit is limited, so carpooling is recommended. As a courtesy to those present, if you arrive after dark, please turn off your headlights and drive slowly with just your parking lights when you reach the summit parking lot. Dress warmly, because the summit of Pilot Mountain can be much colder and windier than the surrounding area.

To learn more about observing the night sky, see the FAS Astronomy Resources at https://www.fas37.org/wp/resources/.
