WEATHER UPDATE: This event is canceled due to forecasted rain.
On Saturday, January 10, 2026, Forsyth Astronomical Society will host a free public astronomy observation at Stone Mountain State Park. The event will run from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, and perhaps longer depending on attendance and conditions. This event is weather-dependent. This post and the FAS Facebook page will be updated with the weather decision the evening before the event.
This event is free and open to the public. The observing site is in the field behind A Loop campsites 33, 34, 35, 36, and 37, which is shown on the map below. Reach the observing site field by walking through the grassy areas between campsites 33 and 34, or 36 and 37. Please be respectful and do not walk through occupied campsites.
No vehicles are allowed in the field. Attendees with telescopes may park in campsites 33, 34, 35, 36, and 37. Additional parking is available at the A Loop bathhouse, in unoccupied campsite driveways, or single-file along the access road, allowing room for vehicles to pass. Attendees who do not have a camping reservation must leave when FAS leaves.
To preserve everyone’s night vision, please refrain from using flashlights or cell phones in the observation area. If you must use a light, shield it with your hand and point it down, and turn it off when you reach the observation area.
To those attending with telescopes, the campground is prone to heavy dew, so plan accordingly.
