Update: Sunday May 15 @ 2:30 pm – The weather is looking good. This observation is on!

On the evening of Sunday May 15 at 9:32 pm, The Earth will begin to slowly move in front of the Sun and block the light from reaching the Moon. Don’t worry, it is not the apocalypse, it is a lunar eclipse.

By 11:29 pm the Moon will be completely covered, beginning a total lunar eclipse which will last until 12:53 am. Because the Earth’s atmosphere will filter some light through, the Moon won’t completely disappear, but it will turn a reddish color creating what is known as a “Blood Moon.”

To view this astronomical phenomenon up close (weather permitting), join the Forsyth Astronomical Society (FAS) at Kaleideum North for an eclipse viewing. FAS will provide telescopes and binoculars for your viewing pleasure.

Before coming out, check for weather updates on the FAS website (http://www.fas37.org/wp/) and FAS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ForsythAstronomical/).
